Guided tours > The Castle Road
Apulian cultural heritage is widespread throughout the region and this means that it should be exploited as a "territorial museum". This would undoubtedly make the region attractive and contribute to determining its tourist potential.
In the last few years the Superintendency for Historical, Environmental, Artistic and Architectural Heritage of Apulia has concentrated its efforts on setting up a cultural network to improve the exploitation of the historical-artistic heritage of the Region.
The first steps could only begin with the State Property Office heritage, under the auspices of the Superintendency: the castles of
Bari, Trani, Castel del Monte, Otranto
and
Copertino
.
The Castles circuit project, made possible thanks to co-financing from the European Community within the Multiregional Operative Programme Tourism, aims at exploiting the museums located in the state owned castles run by the Superintendency. This project will also bring Apulia in line with the European standards for exploitation of museums.
The castles of
Bari, Trani, Castel del Monte, Otranto
and
Copertino
, considered the nerve centres of tourist and cultural development within the Region and the South of Italy and engines of economic, tourist and employment growth, are at the centre of itineraries defined as follows:
Sniffing out castles South of Bari, the first one after 21 Km. is at Mola di Bari, a township once busy during the Crusades due to its port. After its destruction it was rebuilt by Carlo d'Angiò, who furnished it with a Castle in 1278. Move further down the SS. 16 to the mind-boggling Castle of Monopoli. It rises up on the seafront and constitutes another link (moving southwards) in the sea-defense line a wanted by Frederick II. It was later to be fortified by the Angevins, and in 1552 again by Carlo V, who unified the previdous Arragonese fort with the ancient cylindrical tower. Conversano, an ancient peucetic centre, that seems to identify itself with the ancient Norba. Immediately after the Villa Garibaldi we come out into the Piazza del Castello, over-shadowed by the magnificent trapezoid construction built by the Normans as a defensive fort. The following modifications help transform it into a splendid residence. The courtyard, with its porticos and loggias, is lovely. Inside the castle there is a collection of paintings from the Cinquecento Neapolitan School, as well as rooms with splendid frescos. In August locals dress up on horseback for the St. Rocco Festival. In Gioia del Colle, it is pobble to witness the magnificient Castle founded at the end of the XI Century by a Norman, Riccardo Siniscalco (Roberto il Guiscardo's brother).
