Viewed for generations as nothing more than the rural, underdeveloped back water of Italy; rife with corruption, Mafioso and malaria, after continued redevelopment, due in part to large investment from the European Union, Southern Italy, particularly the Apulia region - Italy's heel - is becoming an increasingly popular tourist destination.

Puglia is a region filled with exceptional beauty and excellent beaches. Many of the local farmhouses in the locality have been touchingly restored and now offer excellent tourist accommodation. Most of the farmhouses in the region lie little more than a kilometre away from the sea. Traditionally farmhouses were not built near the sea to lessen the risk of attack from marauding pirates.

Roman amphitheatres, such as the one at Lecce are well worth a visit, so too are the numerous Castles in the region, such as Del Monte Castle and Otranto Castle.

Local produce olive oils, cheeses and excellent wines which are all plentiful in the region and a must to experience while visiting.

The two largest cities in the region are Bari and Brindisi. Both cities are served by Ryanair daily and offer an excellent base from which to explore the region. To get the most from the region though and to explore the area's small villages and secluded beaches, hiring a car is a must. But if the thought of driving in Italy puts you off, you will be relieved to know that Apulia is relatively flat compared to Tuscany, perfect cycling country.
